Finally winding down off the jetlag / by Tahlia Roper

And I’m ready to wrap up the last week of my month-long Turkey excursion.

I’ll start by recapping more of Rhodes.

Rhodes day 2

Sunday July 17th

Given that the night before I stayed out very late gawking at the scene of barstreet, I caught up on some much-needed z’s and lounged for quite some time Sunday morning. I finally roused myself enough to search for food and a beach.

I found a beautiful cafe just inside the castle walls.

In Greece I had a lot more questioning of “Where are you from”, the cutest older gent whom I believe was running the restaurant asked me this and of course, I told him Tulsa, Oklahoma. After that when my waiter came over, he came back over to me and then basically proceeded to arrange a marriage between me and this waiter (who was already married), and I quote, “You get married, you move to Oklahoma, you will work in her family business”…First of all sir, I do not have a family business however I am currently in the process of creating generational wealth for my cat. We all had a good laugh and I ordered: A cappuccino, hummus, and zucchini meatballs (we had to discuss how they were not actually ball shape or meat…🤣). Everything was delicious and the setting was most cozy with an amazing tree growing through the center.

I spent some time talking to a couple of Greeks at the neighboring table. When I brought up Istanbul, they said, “You mean Constantinople”. They talked about how Greeks would have taken better care of Constantinople but I’m not getting into a Turkish vs Greek debate. They were nice gents and shared their history with me. People just get to live on a Greek island…full time…it’s wild.

Everywhere I land it takes me about an hour before I’m googling: “price of a house in ___”, “how to get ___ citizenship”.

I’m a saucy lady that wants to live everywhere, what can I say?

After my entertaining lunch, I hopped on a bus to Faliraki and headed for Kalithea Springs.

Kalithea Springs used to house healing thermal waters, while the waters no longer run as they once did it’s still an incredibly beautiful and relaxing beach.

The museum is also architecturally interesting.

And of course, a good boi can always be found.

When it was time to leave I attempted to catch a bus and found that there were about 20 other people also attempting this catch. Considering Kalithea is at the end of Faliraki and on the way back to Rhodes Old Town, there were full buses passing us by.

After waiting quite a bit, I decided to begin walking back to Rhodes because I don’t like to be stagnant. It was about a 5 mile walk but I was luckily picked up by a bus about half a mile in. I was very thankful because I was quite dehydrated.

The first thing I did when I got back to Rhodes was immediately hydrate and have a fruit smoothie.

Water never tasted so good.

Did I mention how cool it was to be in a castle? Call my old fashioned but - I think the castle life is for me.

I met up with a new friend to drink Raki and the whole time we were there I had this excellent view of this older gent who was probably doing the same.

After Raki, a little hookah sesh, we danced in the drama of the Fuego nightclub.

A short walk home through the mostly shut-down castle and it was off to sleep.

I absolutely love Rhodes Old Town.
